A Must-Share Story

Terry, attending a kick-start workshop about making more of your career, followed the instructor’s suggestion: “Wander outside until you see something that catches your attention. Something that draws you to it.” Terry exited the door, attempted to remove his everyday blinders, and began to look around with new eyes. A colorful trash can, a series of brightly-painted fence posts, a cluster of caregivers and toddlers feeding ducks, none of which offered a “pull” for Terry. He sauntered on, around a bend, and onto a walking path. Given that the afternoon was coming to a close, he lifted his head in time to see the first street light illuminate. Somehow, he felt an unexplainable tug to this humble, ordinary sidewalk lamp. Well, why not, he thought. He paused, looked up and down the pole, and asked, “Who are you, and what do you have tell me, you mundane, everyday chunk of wood?” Without a click of the heels or other fictional-type interruption, the tree stated its message, clear as a newly-shined window. “I am a tree.” Terry went home ruminating on a different view of himself and of his job.
